Over the years, our journey has evolved from Vision Trust to what is now the Vision Healthcare Foundation (VHCF). This transition reflects not just a name change, but an expansion of our mission and impact. What began as a focused effort to provide quality eye care has grown into a broader commitment to healthcare, inclusivity, and community well-being beyond just Karachi. VHCF carries forward the same values of compassion, service, and integrity that defined Vision Trust, while embracing new opportunities to serve more people and address wider health needs.
Mazhar and I share a lifelong commitment to serving humanity, a vision that led to the creation of Vision Trust. Over the years, many of our aspirations have come to life, while many more continue to guide our mission of compassion and service. Fifty years ago, in 1972, two close friends and classmates sat together on a makeshift roadside bench, witnessing the hardships around them. With compassionate hearts and thoughtful minds, they observed the widespread suffering; poverty, illness, and a general sense of neglect that surrounded them. Though deeply moved, they felt powerless at that moment. They didn’t know how or what exactly to do, but they made a vow to each other: one day, they would work to ease the suffering they saw.
This moment occurred soon after they had completed their tenth grade.
Three decades later, in 2003, one of them had become a respected Judge and Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, later serving at the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The other had established himself as a renowned ophthalmologist. Then, as if by divine providence, a friend offered them a 1,600 square foot, two-bedroom apartment on the first floor—a space that would become the starting point for their dream. And so, the vow called for action.
A charitable eye care clinic was born. It began as a Welfare Association managing the Sheikh Aziz-ur-Rehman Memorial Eye Clinic (2003–2015) in Bahadurabad, Karachi.
In 2009, the administrative structure evolved into Vision Trust. By 2016, with the support of the K&N’s Foundation, the clinic relocated to Jamshed Town. This marked the beginning of Khairun’nisa Eye Hospital.
Today, the hospital operates as a well-equipped, secondary to tertiary level eye care facility, treating over 100 patients daily and conducting 15 to 20 surgeries each day. More than 80% of patients receive care free of cost or at subsidized rates. To date, 100,359 consultations have been provided, and over 24,233 surgeries have been performed—a number that continues to grow.
By 2022, fifty years after that vow made by two determined young boys, their shared vision evolved into Vision Healthcare Foundation. This nonprofit is now registered under Section 42 of the Companies Act, 2017, with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.
Having completed its conceptual stage, the organization is now preparing a Master Plan with the help of architects, engineers, and designers—subject to funding availability. This plan is aimed for completion by the end of 2023.
With hope and prayer, construction is expected to begin in early 2024.
May Allah grant us the time, strength, and resources to build a facility greater in scope and accessibility than ever before—one that continues to serve the less fortunate with compassion and excellence. May our humble efforts be accepted, and may we touch more lives with the same spirit that led to our very first step.
Let’s join hands to serve the underserved and the overlooked. Together, we can help remove the barriers that prevent the vulnerable from living a life of dignity and health.
